We are all double cleansing, oil cleansing and some of us washing our face with a wash cloth and warm water (never understood those people) right? No, not at all, if only that was the truth. I get so many women asking me why their skin is breaking out, even though they are using the most expensive products on the market. When I ask them how they cleanse their skin, or how often, I’m literally shocked. Some say only when they shower, others only in the morning and the rest only in the evenings.
Of course there are few that say they wash their face day and night but are still experiencing problems, and then I ask them what about exfoliation or deep cleansing. The answer is often never or they don’t like to use harsh scrubs on their skin - I got a solution for that too. But let’s go back to just cleansing your skin, and start from there.
WHY YOU SHOULD CLEAN YOUR SKIN DAY & NIGHT
If there were only one thing everyone should do, it would be to clean their skin. Your skin is your largest organ, and your skin will age up to 10 times faster (read that somewhere) if you go to bed with your make up on! Now, we don’t want that do we?
Even if you don't wear makeup, the skin on your face comes into contact with residue from other skin-care products like moisturizer and sunscreen, as well as pollutants, microbes, dirt, and other debris, not to mention oils, sweat, and dead skin cells. And imagine going to bed with makeup, pollution & dirt on your skin, night after night, smudging your pillow case (let’s hope you are not sleeping on an expensive silk pillow case) because let’s face it, how often do you wash your linens? Once a week? Every other week? Once a month? Imagine the bacteria’s that thrive in your left-over makeup, sweat & dirt? Ok. I’ll stop now, but you get the point.
Your skin works the hardest during night time, trying to get rid of all the free radicals it caught during the day. So while it’s hard at work, renewing itself, wouldn't it be nice to give it a helping hand to speed up the process?
For those that still don't want to clean their skin before going to bed, think about this for a moment.
If you think cleaning your skin before bedtime is enough, think again. You have to clean it before applying any other product. Like I said, your skin works overtime during the night. And then the first thing you do in the morning is to apply your precious serum (you spent this weeks worth of salary on?) on top? Or a foundation? Yack… You are locking all the dirt in, it will clog your pores, and create a dull layer of dead skin cells. Who wants that?
Not me, and hopefully not you. So what do I use to cleanse my skin?
I double cleanse in the evening to make sure skin is clean after the day. I use oil cleanser day and night from Votary, I change it up depending on my skin needs, then I have one in the shower, either a cream or gel cleanser from Nuori. I’m always looking for the best one, so here I try and test different ones. Then I exfoliate 2-3 times a week, but not with a harsh scrub, NEVER. I use enzyme peeling powders that foam up and eat your dead skin cells, like pacmans! (Remember those little hungry dudes, when you played Nintendo back in the 90’s) Currently obsessing over Nuori Supreme Polishing Treatment, you just need to massage it gently for 2-3 minutes and voila. Your skin feels so soft afterwards as you’ve removed all the buildup of dead skin cells, and your skin is now ready to receive any treatment or product of your choice, that can penetrate and let all the nice beneficial ingredients go do their thing.
Finally, a deep cleanse. I do that once a week to remove any impurities that might have arrived during the week with some form of clay mask that can extract the impurities from your skin. (Try the Deep Detox Face Mask from Magic Stripes.)
Let’s just say, that this was a session in skin cleansing! Now go and clean your skin….
